America In Focus: What Happened When 7 Trump Voters and 6 Biden Voters Tried to Find Common Ground

If American democracy is going to thrive again, regular people on the left and right have to find more ways to deal with each other. We have to understand why we disagree rather than merely stew in those disagreements. Some on the left characterize conservatives as fascists and nut jobs; some on the right paint progressives as communists and criminals. Where does a democracy go from there? Nowhere good, at least not without more talking and listening. Which is why we asked Frank Luntz to convene our latest Times Opinion focus group: a mix of Biden voters and Trump voters who started with something in common: They all echoed the movie “Network” in saying, “I’m as mad as hell, and not going to take this anymore.” In that shared outlook, could the participants find common ground?
