Americans Offer Gloomy State of the Nation Report

Americans’ satisfaction with a variety of aspects of U.S. society and the state of policy in key issue areas remains subdued in 2022 after falling in 2021. In fact, in only one area — acceptance of gays and lesbians — are more Americans satisfied now than were in 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over the past year, there have been further meaningful declines in 10 areas, most notably in satisfaction with energy policy, the nation’s military strength, the state of the economy, and abortion policy. CONTINUED

Vaccine Monitor: 6 in 10 Parents of Teens and One-Third of Parents of 5-11 Year-Olds Say Their Child is Vaccinated for COVID-19

Growing shares of parents say that their eligible children have gotten at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and three in ten parents with children under age 5 say they want to get their child vaccinated immediately once they become eligible, a new KFF COVID-19 Vaccine Monitor report shows.

Among parents with children ages 12-17, 61% now say that their child is vaccinated, up from 49% in November. Another 3% now say they plan to get their child vaccinated as soon as possible, and 6% say they want to “wait and see” how it works for others before doing so. Nearly a quarter (23%) of parents with adolescent children say they definitely will not get them vaccinated, while a small share (4%) say they will only do so if it is required for school. …

About one in seven (14%) parents of unvaccinated children ages 5-17 say that news about the omicron variant makes them more likely to get their [child] vaccinated, while a large majority (79%) say that it makes no difference. CONTINUED

Who will win Florida in 2024? A new poll has Biden losing to these two prominent Republicans

A new poll says President Joe Biden is struggling in the politically pivotal state of Florida, where more than half of potential voters disapprove of his handling of the economy and of his job overall.

The Suffolk University/USA TODAY Network poll of likely Florida voters suggests only 39% of respondents approve of the job Biden is doing, while 53% disapprove. …

The new survey also reports that two prominent Florida Republicans – Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sen. Marco Rubio – are leading in their re-election bids, but not without potential danger signals. CONTINUED

How the upcoming Supreme Court battle can help Biden and Democrats in the midterms

Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer’s retirement announcement last week comes at a vulnerable time for President Joe Biden. His approval rating is at its lowest point, 41%, in an average of polls. His decline is clear even among core Democratic groups.

The good news for the President is the upcoming Supreme Court nomination fight likely can’t hurt and could help him gain ground with his base. For starters, it could help motivate them to vote in the 2022 midterm election, as nominations during former President Donald Trump’s administration taught us. …

Enthusiasm is important because midterms have lower turnout than presidential elections, and Democrats have an enthusiasm problem right now. A recent NBC News poll found that Republicans are more than 10 points more likely to say they have high interest in the 2022 midterms than Democrats. This a major decline among Democrats from a few months ago, and a reversal from where we were at this point in the 2018 midterm cycle. CONTINUED

Satisfaction With Own Life Five Times Higher Than With U.S.

Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and record-high inflation, Americans’ satisfaction with the direction of the country has fallen to 17%, the lowest in a year. At the same time, Americans’ satisfaction with their own lives has ticked up to 85%, just five points shy of the 2020 record-high point. CONTINUED

Time to Accept Covid and Move On?

Americans continue to be concerned about the spread of Covid, but the vast majority say it is time to accept it as part of life. The latest Monmouth University Poll finds a majority of the public continues to support some preventative measures, such as face mask and social distancing guidelines, but not others, such as workplace vaccine mandates. Also, faith in the ability of President Joe Biden and the federal government to get a handle on the pandemic continues to fade amid persistent opposition from nearly 1 in 5 American adults to getting vaccinated. …

Even though concern about getting Covid has increased, a stable proportion of the public remains opposed to vaccination. While nearly half of American adults (45%) report getting a booster shot, a significant number (37%) remain unlikely to ever do so –which includes 17% who remain opposed even to getting the initial vaccination.
