Inside McConnell’s Campaign to Take Back the Senate and Thwart Trump

… As Mr. Trump works to retain his hold on the Republican Party, elevating a slate of friendly candidates in midterm elections, Mr. McConnell and his allies are quietly, desperately maneuvering to try to thwart him. The loose alliance, which was once thought of as the G.O.P. establishment, for months has been engaged in a high-stakes candidate recruitment campaign, full of phone calls, meetings, polling memos and promises of millions of dollars. It’s all aimed at recapturing the Senate majority, but the election also represents what could be Republicans’ last chance to reverse the spread of Trumpism before it fully consumes their party.

Mr. McConnell for years pushed Mr. Trump’s agenda and only rarely opposed him in public. But the message that he delivers privately now is unsparing, if debatable: Mr. Trump is losing political altitude and need not be feared in a primary, he has told Mr. Ducey in repeated phone calls, as the Senate leader’s lieutenants share polling data they argue proves it.

In conversations with senators and would-be senators, Mr. McConnell is blunt about the damage he believes Mr. Trump has done to the G.O.P., according to those who have spoken to him. Privately, he has declared he won’t let unelectable “goofballs” win Republican primaries. CONTINUED

Most Americans have experienced true love in their lives

Does true love exist? A large majority of Americans believe it does, and most say they themselves have experienced true love at some point in their lives, including most men and women. But finding true love may not be easy: less than one in five Americans think most of the people around them have found true love, and many who have experienced it — particularly among women — say it is different from what they expected it to be. Most Americans have come out ahead economically in the pandemic, despite inflation

Public discontent with America’s pandemic-battered economy obscures the good news: Even after inflation, most of the country has been coming out ahead. Red-hot demand for labor means lower-income workers can command wage increases that outpace rising prices. So can middle-income workers who switch jobs.

Relief checks approved by lawmakers of both parties and sent out by Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden have given the majority of households a cushion. Those higher up the income scale have seen handsome increases in the values of their homes and investment assets. Even those who fault Biden’s policies for exacerbating inflation risks acknowledge that, right now, the pandemic economy continues to offer large, underappreciated rewards. CONTINUED

U.S. efforts on pandemic, economy: Things are a bit better, but not yet good

The times, they are uncertain. People think the fight against COVID has improved dramatically in recent weeks, up double-digits, but still not good, say Americans who’ve now been through a few up-and-down waves. With a majority still concerned about the virus, it’s not over for them, as people voice both patience with restrictions and some frustration from dealing with it all.

For parents, in particular, there’s still majority support for masking in schools. At the same time, many of them say the pandemic has taken a toll on their kids’ emotional health and education. CONTINUED

CNN Poll: Neither Biden nor Trump has their party’s full support for a 2024 run

A significant number of both Democrats and Republicans currently hope to see their parties find alternatives to President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump in the next presidential election, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS. But very few have specific candidates in mind, underscoring how distant — and potentially mutable — the 2024 race remains.

The survey, conducted in January and February, found that 45% of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters wanted to see the party renominate Biden in 2024, while 51% preferred a different candidate. …

Across the aisle, Republican and Republican-leaning voters are about evenly split between wanting their party to nominate Trump again (50%) or wanting a different candidate (49%). CONTINUED

Republicans may be divided over Trump, but that’s of little solace to Biden and the Democrats

Democrats got another harsh reminder this past week of what the November elections could bring, which is to say trouble. With inflation roaring at a pace not seen in 40 years, intraparty Democratic debates about mask mandates and President Biden’s weak approval ratings, the fundamentals for the midterm elections continue to look ominous for the party.

That is the overarching reality even though the Republicans spent a good part of the week fighting among themselves. The GOP remains a party divided over former president Donald Trump, the 2020 election and what happened on Jan. 6, 2021. They are a party with no clear governing agenda, yet they could be in control of Congress a year from now. CONTINUED
