Consumer Confidence Ticked Down Slightly in April

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index® decreased slightly in April, after an increase in March. The Index now stands at 107.3 (1985=100), down from 107.6 in March. The Present Situation Index—based on consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions—fell to 152.6 from 153.8 last month. However, the Expectations Index—based on consumers’ short-term outlook for income, business, and labor market conditions—ticked up to 77.2 from 76.7. CONTINUED

AJC poll: Kemp has strong shot to knock out Perdue without a runoff

Gov. Brian Kemp has a chance of landing an outright victory against former U.S. Sen. David Perdue, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll that shows the Republican incumbent with a hefty advantage over his Donald Trump-backed challenger. Kemp led Perdue 53% to 27% in the poll of likely voters in the Republican primary, which is now less than a month away. …

Herschel Walker had an even greater lead over his Republican rivals in the U.S. Senate race, with his support in the poll at 66%. CONTINUED

Bipartisan Voter Support For Comprehensive Drug Pricing Reform

A new national survey released today demonstrates overwhelming and unwavering support among voters for Congress to take action to lower the prices of prescription drugs, including allowing Medicare to negotiate lower prices and curbing drug company price hikes. The poll, conducted by the bipartisan research team GS Strategy Group and Hart Research Associates, finds that 83 percent of voters back Medicare negotiation and 77 percent are in favor of limiting annual drug price increases, including support from large majorities of Democrats, Republicans, and independents. The Democratic message from Utah — of all places

… At the hotly contested convention, Utah Democrats opted by a 782-to-594 vote not to endorse their own candidate for the Senate seat held by embattled right-winger Mike Lee. Instead, Utah Democrats endorsed the independent candidacy of Evan McMullin, a former CIA agent who ran as a never-Trump Republican protest candidate in the 2016 presidential election. …

The underlying message in the Utah Democrats’ endorsement of McMullin is the same one that has animated the Jan. 6 committee in the House: In the battle against the forces out to nullify free elections, you take your allies where you can find them without worrying about litmus tests. CONTINUED

Americans Widely Favor Welcoming Ukrainian Refugees

Seventy-eight percent of Americans say they would approve of “allowing up to 100,000” Ukrainian refugees into the United States as the process to do just that gets underway. This is the highest level of U.S. public support for admitting refugees that Gallup has found in its polling on various refugee situations since 1939. CONTINUED

In 2024, it could be Biden, Harris or bust

… Biden isn’t your typical incumbent seeking reelection. He’ll turn 82 a few weeks after the 2024 election, and his job approval numbers have been terrible, primarily because the economy’s inflation numbers are terrible. It’s possible that he simply rides off into the sunset (on an Amtrak train, I suppose).

If Democrats lose the House and Senate during the midterms, as most expect, that could change the dynamics for 2024. So could Trump’s entry into the 2024 race. Either development could allow Biden to position himself as the defender of the political center against Trump, the Jan. 6 insurrectionists and a right-wing, populist GOP that increasingly believes the end justifies the means.
