In California, campaigns ignore Latino voters who could tip Congress, poll finds

Latinos looking to mobilize the largest ethnic voting group in California around key progressive issues are raising the alarm over the lack of campaign outreach to a critical voting bloc.

The Latino Community Foundation, a nonprofit running one of the largest campaigns to engage Latino voters in California, partnered with the Latino-owned polling and analytics firm BSP Research to conduct a new statewide poll of 1,200 Latino voters ahead of the midterm elections in November.

Latino voters will likely make a difference in competitive races across California, particularly in the San Joaquin Valley region and Orange County, Jacqueline Martinez Garcel, CEO of the Latino Community Foundation, said to NBC News in an interview ahead of the poll’s release. CONTINUED

Fox News Poll: Three-way race in Pennsylvania GOP Senate primary election

Mehmet Oz and Kathy Barnette gain significant ground as support for David McCormick dips, making it a tight three-way race in Pennsylvania’s Republican primary for U.S. Senate.

In March, businessman McCormick led television celebrity Dr. Oz by 9 points (24%-15%). A new Fox News survey of Pennsylvania GOP primary voters shows the candidates trading places, with Oz receiving 22% to McCormick’s 20% and political commentator Barnette right with them at 19%. Next, is businesswoman Carla Sands at 8% and real estate investor Jeff Bartos at 7%. …

In the GOP gubernatorial primary, Doug Mastriano has broken away from the pack and now leads with 29% support. The next tier includes Lou Barletta at 17%, Bill McSwain at 13%, and Dave White at 11%. CONTINUED

Most Americans will balk if conservatives challenge contraception and gay marriage after overturning Roe

In the wake of last week’s momentous report that five conservative Supreme Court justices appear poised to strike down the Roe v. Wade decision that established a constitutional right to abortion almost half a century ago, politicians and pundits have started to ponder a previously unthinkable question. Could contraception and same-sex marriage come next? …

A new Yahoo News/YouGov poll, however, shows just how unpopular such attacks would be. The survey of 1,577 U.S. adults, which was conducted from May 3 to 6, found that just a quarter (26%) think same-sex marriage should be “illegal in America,” while nearly 6 in 10 (58%) think it should be legal. Sixteen percent are unsure. …

Confidence in Supreme Court has collapsed since conservatives took control

A new Yahoo News/YouGov poll shows that Americans’ confidence in the U.S. Supreme Court has collapsed over the last 20 months — a period that began with former President Donald Trump and Senate Republicans installing a 6-3 conservative majority ahead of the 2020 election and culminated last week with the leak of a draft opinion signaling that five GOP-appointed justices plan to overturn Roe v. Wade. …

Today, just half of voters still express some (37%) or a lot (14%) of confidence in the court, while the other half now expresses either a little (24%) or none (26%). And among all Americans — as opposed to just registered voters — most (53%) now say they have either no confidence in the Supreme Court (28%) or only a little (25%). CONTINUED

Manufacturing Opinion on Lifting Title 42 Border Restrictions

The Biden Administration intends to fully lift the Title 42 border restrictions, which have been in place since March 2020, on May 23. A federal judge appointed by Donald Trump, however, has ordered a two-week halt to the phasing out of those restrictions.

In the meantime, three media polls—Politico/Morning Consult, Fox and CNN—have conducted surveys to get the views of the public on this proposed change. …

It’s clear the poll results cannot be interpreted literally, as though the vast majority of the US public has come to a conclusion about lifting Title 42 restrictions. But the results do indicate that emphasizing health concerns as the reason for Title 42 resonates with the public. CONTINUED

Biden pushes ‘ultra-MAGA’ label on GOP as he defends record

President Joe Biden on Tuesday warned voters unhappy with soaring inflation and his stalled domestic agenda against turning power over to “ultra-MAGA” Republicans in the midterm elections as he increasingly tries to cast former President Donald Trump and his adherents as a political foil. …

Biden’s branding of his opposition as “ultra-MAGA Republicans” — a reference to Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan — has emerged as a White House trope in recent weeks as the White House hopes for a pre-midterms reset for Democrats, who face stiff headwinds heading into the November elections. White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday that “it’s the president’s phrase.” CONTINUED
