61% would carry protest signs. Here’s what they’d say

61% of registered voters in the latest NBC News Poll say they are upset enough about an issue to carry a protest sign for a day. That’s up from September 2015, the last time the question was polled, when 55% of respondents said the same.

When asked what their sign would say, voters were given a chance to respond freely, rather than pick from a pre-selected list of choices. CONTINUED

Colorado GOP senator becomes Democrat, cites vote falsehoods

Citing alarm toward the Republican Party’s widespread embrace of 2020 election conspiracies, a moderate GOP Colorado state senator has switched his affiliation to Democrat, enhancing that party’s prospects to retain its majority in the chamber in the November midterms.

Kevin Priola, who represents Adams County in Denver’s suburbs, said in a letter Monday he was horrified by the Jan. 6 insurrection on the U.S. Capitol and had waited in vain for his party to repudiate it as well as former President Donald Trump, who continues to insist that it was stolen. Nevada: Cortez Masto, Sisolak gain midterm rebound after death of Roe v. Wade

Inflation and the economy remain the top issue facing Nevadans today, a Reno Gazette Journal/Suffolk University poll found, but as concern over abortion rights takes center stage in the midterm elections, the two vulnerable Democratic incumbents at the top of the ticket have gained a lead on Republican opponents. Conducted in early August, the poll surveyed 500 likely midterm voters across the state, all of whom are registered to vote in Nevada. …

In Nevada’s pivotal U.S. Senate race, incumbent Catherine Cortez Masto, the country’s first Latina senator, has turned a three-point deficit in April into a seven-point advantage. Today, she leads 45 percent to 38 percent over Republican challenger Adam Laxalt, a former one-term Nevada attorney general. …

Meanwhile, Gov. Steve Sisolak has overtaken Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo — 43 percent to 40 percent — although the race is within the poll’s 4.4 percent margin of error. In April, Lombardo held a two-point advantage over Sisolak. CONTINUED

There’s a Huge Divide Among Democrats Over How Hard to Campaign for Democracy

… Even after the experience of 2020 and the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 — and even as Republicans in the midterms parrot Trump’s falsehoods — democracy has polled relatively low on the electorate’s list of concerns. The Jan. 6 committee hearings were encouraging. But Democrats competing in elections this year have not been pressing the issue anywhere near as hard as other concerns.

Of the more than $300 million spent by Democrats on broadcast advertisements this year throughout the country, ads that mentioned Jan. 6, the insurrection, democracy or stolen elections accounted for less than 4 percent of all spending, according to an analysis compiled for POLITICO by the ad tracking firm AdImpact. That’s less than Democrats spent on subjects ranging from energy and the environment to education, roads and infrastructure, abortion, health care, Trump and guns. CONTINUED

NBC News poll: 57% of voters say investigations into Trump should continue

A clear majority of American voters believe that the various investigations into alleged wrongdoing by former President Donald Trump should continue, according to a national NBC News poll conducted after the FBI searched Trump’s Florida home and recovered documents marked as “top secret” earlier this month.

The poll also shows a dissatisfied public, with three-quarters of voters saying the county is headed in the wrong direction, a record 58% who say that America’s best years are behind it and 61% who say they’re willing to carry a protest sign for a day because they’re so upset. CONTINUED

Mitch McConnell is right. Senate Republicans have a candidate problem.

We’ve become used to displays of braggadocio by politicians (see former President Donald Trump). That’s why it’s notable when a politician admits that the political winds might not be going their way.

Such was the case when Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell said this week that Republicans had a better chance of taking back the House than the Senate. “Candidate quality has a lot to do with [it],” he noted. …

Democrats’ chances of holding the Senate didn’t look so great when 2022 began. They weren’t in as bad of shape as they were in the House (as is still the case), but they were clear underdogs.

Today, an average of different forecasts and political betting odds indicate that Democrats are slightly favored to hold on to Congress’ upper chamber. CONTINUED
