Approval of Biden’s foreign policy performance remains stable

Forty-five percent of the public approve of how Joe Biden is handling his job as president, slightly higher than the 41% who said the same last month. Views of Biden’s handling of foreign policy are about the same as his overall approval rating. …

In general, 45% approve of how Biden is handling foreign policy, up slightly from 41% last month. Among Democrats, 74% approve in both the latest poll and in January. Approval among Republicans is at 18%, up from 12% last month.

Sixty-one percent of the public are concerned about China’s influence around the world, about the same as last year. But although the war in Ukraine is now entering its second year, fewer people are worried about Russia’s influence. Fifty-three percent of the public are concerned about Russia’s influence around the world, down from 64% last March. CONTINUED

Americans do not believe the country is ready for another pandemic

Americans have a pessimistic view of American public health, even as most report their own health and well-being as mostly good. Our new Axios-Ipsos American Health Index also shows that only three in ten Americans believe the country is ready for another pandemic, and a quarter or less believe that either American businesses or the government put people’s health first. Additionally, this survey updates a number of health-related behaviors ranging from diet, to vaccination uptake, to driving habits. CONTINUED

Fox News Poll: Half say US should support Ukraine as long as it takes

Friday marks the one-year anniversary since Russia invaded Ukraine and half of American voters say the U.S. should back the embattled nation for as long as it takes, according to a new Fox News survey.

The survey, released Thursday, asks what the timeframe should be for U.S. support in Ukraine: 50% think it should continue until Ukraine wins, while 46% think it should be time limited.

Democrats (66%) favor sticking with Ukraine until it’s victorious, while Republicans (61%) opt for a time limit on U.S. support. Independents split: 49% set limit vs. 45% as long as it takes. CONTINUED

Most Americans want Congress to compromise as debt ceiling looms

Despite heated rhetoric in the halls of Congress, most Americans say they want lawmakers to work together to address complex problems facing the nation, according to the latest PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll.

Seventy percent of Americans said they want federal government officials to achieve compromise and find solutions. That includes majorities in both parties: 83 percent of Democrats, 54 percent of Republicans and 69 percent of independents.

Meanwhile, 28 percent of Americans said they want the nation’s lawmakers to stand on principle, even if it creates political gridlock. CONTINUED

Americans want Congress to deal with the debt ceiling. How to do it is complicated

American voters lean in favor of raising the debt ceiling, but are divided on how to pay down the national debt, the latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll finds.

By a 52%-to-46% margin, registered voters said they support raising the debt ceiling. They divide along party lines with 8 in 10 Democrats in favor and 7 in 10 Republicans opposed. Independents are split.

That represents a big jump in support from 2011, the last time Congress faced a pitched fight over raising the debt ceiling. Only a quarter of voters in a Marist poll supported raising the debt ceiling back then. The country had its credit downgraded as a result of the fight. CONTINUED

50-State Survey: Support for Abortion Rights Rising in All States

Support for abortion rights continues to increase among the American public, according to a new survey of more than 22,000 adults conducted by Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) as part of its American Values Atlas project, which contains findings for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Just under two-thirds of Americans (64%) say abortion should be legal in most or all cases, up from 55% in 2010. Meanwhile, just over a third of Americans (34%) say it should be illegal in most or all cases, down from 42% in 2010. The proportion of Americans who say abortion should be illegal in all cases also dropped by more than half — from 15% in 2010 to 7% in December 2022. …

Just a third of Americans (34%) favored overturning Roe in 2022, with a plurality (44%) strongly opposed. In no state did a majority of respondents express support for the overturn of Roe. CONTINUED
