Fox News Poll: GOP maintains advantage on top issues, but Democrats show some momentum

The economy is the most important issue facing the country, according to almost 4 in 10 voters, with immigration/border security coming in a distant second. That’s according to the latest Fox News survey released Sunday.

Out of a list of nine issues, 36% say the economy is the country’s top priority (down from 42% in December). Coming in second is immigration/border security (13%), followed by climate change (10%), guns (9%), crime (7%), health care (7%), voting rights/election integrity (7%), abortion (5%), and foreign policy (4%). …

Voters see Republicans as better able to handle border security (by 24 points), national security (+16), the economy (+15), the federal budget deficit (+12), immigration (+10), and foreign policy and taxes (+8 points each). Democrats are preferred on climate change (by 28 points), health care (+23), Medicare (+23), abortion (+20), Social Security (+16), energy policies (+13), voting rights (+9), election integrity (+7), and school curriculum (+5). Fox News Poll: Trump, DeSantis top 2024 Republican preference

One year out from the 2024 primaries, here is the debut Fox News national survey on the presidential nomination races. Spoiler alert, former President Donald Trump looks formidable, while President Biden faces doubt.

Republican primary voters were read a list of 15 announced and potential candidates for the 2024 nomination. Trump tops the list with 43%, followed by Ron DeSantis at 28%, Nikki Haley and Mike Pence at 7% each, and Greg Abbott and Liz Cheney at 2% each. …

While 37% of Democratic primary voters want to keep Biden as their party’s nominee, a majority of 53% says they would like someone else to run. CONTINUED

Consumer sentiment: Positive business outlook outweighs unemployment concerns

Consumer sentiment lifted for the third straight month in February, rising a modest 3% above January, supported by a 12% improvement in consumers’ outlook over the economy for the year ahead, according to the University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers.

However, sentiment remains well below its historical average; in spite of the recent slowdown in inflation, overall prices are still painfully high for consumers and continue to be at the forefront of their minds, said U-M economist Joanne Hsu, director of the surveys. CONTINUED

American health in polarizing times

This week we released our first Axios-Ipsos American Health Index, which builds off of our Axios-Ipsos Coronavirus Index and expands into some of the biggest worries Americans have around healthcare, behaviors surrounding health and wellness, and what policies the public supports.

Between March 2020 and now, a lot has changed. COVID isn’t the top concern for people anymore, as other perennial issues in the American health landscape, like healthcare costs and drug overdoses, rise to the fore.

Americans Fairly Satisfied With Social Security System

Although a middling 45% of Americans are satisfied with the Social Security and Medicare systems, the programs still earn one of the better satisfaction scores in Gallup’s 2023 rating of issues facing the country. The programs rank sixth out of 22 policy areas rated this year, with the military leading the list at 64%. The quality of the environment (with 44% satisfied) roughly ties Social Security and Medicare, while 15 issues are rated worse. …

In addition to being more satisfied with Social Security and Medicare than with most other policy areas of the country, Americans have been less worried in recent years about the Social Security system than about other issues. CONTINUED
