The Culture Has Moved Left… So the Right has Mobilized

It’s been a depressing six months or so for the left. Aside from Covid’s persistence and the resultant chaos, the progressive agenda beyond infrastructure and re-regulation of business seems stalled; the Supreme Court is charging rightward; and anti-democratic (as well as anti-Democratic) moves are afoot in many states. Savvy political analyst Ron Brownstein wrote in December, “Democrats Are Losing the Culture Wars.”

Yet, over the last couple of generations, the left has pulled American culture in its direction. Social conservatives, feeling cornered, have reacted ferociously to defend their world views and their way of life. They have won some of the resulting battles, but their winning the cultural war is another matter.

Sociologist Michael Hout of NYU has recently canvassed over 45 years of polling data from the General Social Survey, looking at how Americans’ views on dozens of topics have changed. The answer is clear: In the overwhelming majority of cases, Americans’ opinions have moved to the left. Moreover, when we look at Americans’ actions, not just their words, we see the same, dramatic shifts leftward. I am referring throughout to left-right on the cultural spectrum, not left-right on economic issues, which is a different topic. CONTINUED

The NFL is the rare thing that brings all Americans — Democrats and Republicans — together

Almost everything in our world today is divided along political lines. Whether it be something as important as a life saving vaccine or something as simple — and you would think would be non-partisan — as what TV programs people watch or jeans people wear, everything seems to be polarized along partisan lines.

That’s what makes the NFL standout. While the NFL should perhaps worry about the youngest of fans, football is by far the most popular sport in America. It’s a sport whose popularity cuts across political and racial divides. CONTINUED

Biden’s now losing support from the base

One of the most worrisome political signs for the Biden administration from the latest round of polling is that the president isn’t just losing support among typical swing voters—suburbanites, independents, anti-Trump Republicans—but he’s now starting to take friendly fire from his own base.

This vicious cycle is the political version of inflation, providing the White House few obvious tools to get out of the mess they’ve created for themselves. …

The new NBC News poll paints a dismal picture of the president’s predicament. Biden’s overall 43 percent job approval is bad enough. But look at the crosstabs and the numbers are even worse. CONTINUED

D.C. Is a Donut. There Is No Center in Washington Politics

… When it comes to elections—and the politics of the nation as a whole—there is, of course, a center.

Look at polling. Look at the “progressive” ideas discussed or supported by Biden—from protecting the climate to providing child care, from better health care to fairer taxation, from gun control to voting rights, from a woman’s right to choose to education reform—they are all supported by a substantial majority of Americans.

Biden is not advancing a “left” agenda, he is fighting for a majoritarian agenda, for goals sought by the vast majority of us that would, in turn, benefit the vast majority of us. But the grim reality is that D.C. is a donut. There is no “center” in Washington politics. …

The problem is that D.C. politics are increasingly unresponsive to the majority of Americans. CONTINUED

Fox News Poll: Voters reluctant to give Biden a second term

Six in 10 voters would back someone other than President Biden if the 2024 presidential election were today, according to a Fox News national survey released Sunday. That makes his current reelection prospects dimmer than they ever were for his most recent predecessors, Donald Trump and Barack Obama.

At the end of Biden’s first year in office, economic anxiety is higher than a year ago, and many feel the pandemic is not at all under control. His job rating in both these areas is down in recent months, and over half of voters disapprove of Biden’s performance overall. CONTINUED
