Most Americans remember Trayvon Martin’s death and George Zimmerman’s trial

Ten years after Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, and Zimmerman was subsequently found not guilty, most Americans still remember it well — particularly Black Americans. CONTINUED

Economic concerns hurt Biden’s approval, keep Democrats in peril ahead of midterms

Economic discontent is hurting President Joe Biden and his party’s midterm election prospects, with six in 10 Americans reporting inflation hardships, three-quarters saying the economy’s in bad shape and a nearly 20-point lead for the Republican Party in trust to handle it.

Biden has other problems, with underwater ratings for his handling of the invasion of Ukraine, a split on the pandemic and weak scores on personal attributes including leadership, handling a crisis and mental sharpness.

But 40-year-high inflation leads his headaches: Americans are twice as likely to say they’re worse off than better off under his presidency, by 35-17%. CONTINUED

Post-ABC poll finds a deeply pessimistic nation, worried about the economy and Biden’s leadership

President Biden will deliver his State of the Union address on Tuesday to a deeply pessimistic nation, one that largely sees the economy worsening under his watch, disapproves of his leadership on key issues and currently prefers that Republicans control Congress after the November elections, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. …

The poll finds Biden’s presidential approval rating at a new low, with 37 percent saying they approve of the job he is doing and 55 percent saying they disapprove. Overall, 44 percent say they strongly disapprove. Predictably, Republicans overwhelmingly disapprove (86 percent) of his job performance, but most independents (61 percent) also rate him negatively. Among Democrats, 77 percent give Biden positive marks. CONTINUED

Joe Biden Can’t Even Wag the Dog

Our most recent national poll of 1,000 likely voters was completed on the cusp of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine just as President Biden was trying to publicly face down Vladimir Putin and rally the world to oppose the invasion.

Normally, at times of crisis the American public rallies to support our President. Currently, this is not the case. After weeks of President Biden wagging the dog against Putin and Russia, he still received only a 41% job approval with 57% disapproval. The same negative job rating as last month.

Even Joe Biden’s base is not rallying to him. President Biden has high level of disapproval among 2020 Biden voters 22%, Democrats 19%, African Americans 37%, women 55%, Hispanics 57% and independents 64%. CONTINUED

Are the 2022 midterms a done deal?

Mid-term season is upon us. All signs point to it going well for the GOP; in fact, our preliminary forecast gives Democrats just a one in ten chance of retaining control of both the Senate and the House. The big question is less “Will the Republicans win,” but, “How much will they win by”? …

Polling is a snapshot of public sentiment at a specific moment in time, so it’s important to remember that these points are always retroactive and not a guaranteed predictor of what’s to come. Yet unless the situation changes drastically, all signs point to Republicans gaining a meaningful advantage in Congress. CONTINUED

More on Americans’ Satisfaction With Aspects of U.S. Life

… Americans clearly are dissatisfied with and want their government to do more in relation to crime, education, healthcare and the economy. Additionally, although the public appears fairly satisfied with security from terrorism and the status of entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare, they want the government to maintain these issues as top priorities.

Other possible focus points for the federal government are more complicated. These include hot-button issues such as race relations, the environment and immigration. Americans’ intense partisan differences raise their heads in these contexts, presenting a less clear way forward for elected officials desirous of following the public’s direction. CONTINUED
