Inflation Dominates Americans’ Economic Concerns in March

Roughly one in five Americans mention the high cost of living/inflation (17%), or fuel prices (4%) specifically, as the most important problem facing the U.S. today. Together, these account for over half of the economic issues that 35% of Americans cite as the nation’s top problem. Within that group, 11% identify the economy in general as the chief problem. New York: Hochul Has Commanding Lead Over Williams & Suozzi with Dems; With Cuomo in Race, Hochul Leads 38-30%

In a three-way Democratic gubernatorial primary, Governor Kathy Hochul has a commanding 40-point lead over both New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and Rep. Tom Suozzi among registered New York Democrats. If former Governor Andrew Cuomo runs in the primary, Hochul has the support of 38% of Democrats, compared to 30% for Cuomo, 10% for Suozzi and 7% for Williams, according to a new Siena College poll of registered New York State voters released today.

By a 56-30% margin, voters say the 2019 bail reform law has been bad for New York. … Voters say the law has resulted in an increase in crime, 64-24%, and think it should be amended to give judges more discretion to set bail based on the seriousness of the crime or the individual’s criminal record, 82-11%. Three in five Americans say Will Smith was wrong to hit Chris Rock

… A YouGov Direct poll conducted on March 28 indicates that while most Americans did not watch the 2022 Academy Awards the night before, a majority now say they’ve heard a lot (56%) or a little (33%) about Smith hitting Rock. Around three in five Americans (61%) say Smith’s actions were wrong, while 21% say they were right. CONTINUED

Getting Worse for Biden, He Continues to Fail

This national poll of 1,000 likely voters conducted between March 17 to 22, shows that it’s not getting better for President Biden and it could get worse.

Only 29% say that the United States is headed in the right direction. This is the lowest level we polled on this question since 2016. Two thirds of the voters, 65%, say the country is on the wrong track. Naturally, the wrong track sentiment is highest among Republicans 92% and 2020 Trump voters 94%. …

On the generic ballot for Congress, Republicans have their widest lead that we have seen in well over a decade. Republicans in Congress lead the Democrats 48% to 44%. CONTINUED

Shifting Support for Some, But Not All, Covid Mandates

Support for Covid-19 face-mask and social distancing guidelines has dropped from half of the public to just a third in the past two months as a large majority of Americans endorse the C.D.C. relaxing its recommendations. At the same time, a little under half of the public backs workplace vaccine mandates, a number that has not moved since January. The latest Monmouth University Poll also finds waning concern about family members becoming ill from the virus at the same time as more people report testing positive for Covid sometime during the pandemic. …

Regardless of where they stand now, half of the American public (50%) would prefer to see the government continue to adjust Covid guidelines and mandates in response to different variants as they arise. CONTINUED

Concerns about nuclear weapons

Most Americans think Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has increased the possibility of nuclear weapons being used anywhere in the world. Forty-five percent are personally extremely or very concerned about Russia using nuclear weapons that target the United States. And a similar proportion are extremely or very concerned about the possibility of the United States being pulled into a war with Russia.

Forty-seven percent of Americans are extremely or very concerned about the United States getting drawn into a war with Russia, 38% are somewhat concerned, and 15% have little or no concern about a war with Russia. Among those concerned about war with Russia, 83% think the Russian invasion of Ukraine has increased the possibility that nuclear weapons would be deployed. CONTINUED
