How the Other Half Votes: The Southwest

• We’re continuing our series of looking at how the most vote-rich counties in a state vote versus those that make up the rest of the state by moving to the Southwest.
• The region contains the key swing states of Arizona and Nevada, both of which are dominated by a single county that casts well north of half the statewide vote.

How Americans feel about Clarence Thomas and Supreme Court ethics

New reporting recently revealed that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas accepted lavish trips at the invitation of — and paid for by — Harlan Crow, a Texas real estate billionaire. New polling by the Economist and YouGov finds that most Americans disapprove of Thomas’s having failed to disclose these trips, with many believing that such disclosures should be required of justices of the Supreme Court. …

By 58% to 24%, Americans disapprove of Thomas accepting luxury trips from an American real estate developer without including them in his financial disclosures. Republicans, however, are only slightly more likely to disapprove (40%) than to approve (34%). CONTINUED

Americans Are Critical of China’s Global Role – as Well as Its Relationship With Russia

A large majority of U.S. adults (83%) continue to have negative views of China, and the share who have very unfavorable views (44%) has increased by 4 percentage points since last year. Around four-in-ten Americans also now describe China as an enemy of the United States, rather than as a competitor or a partner – up 13 points since last year, according to a March 20-26, 2023, Pew Research Center survey. …

Americans are also critical of China’s behavior on the international stage. Around three-quarters or more say China does not take the interests of other countries like the U.S. into account, that it interferes in the affairs of other countries and that it does not contribute to peace and stability around the world. What hurts Republicans more: Trump, or extreme abortion bans?

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the marquee Republican issues: Trump and abortion. Former President Trump has been indicted, a liberal justice who ran largely on preserving abortion rights won by 11 points in Wisconsin’s Supreme Court election, and federal court judges have issued opposing rulings on mifepristone, a drug used in the two-pill medication-abortion sequence. Some on the Right have started ringing alarm bells.

Sorting out which is more of a drag—important if Republicans want to actually win an election in 2024, since they may or may not be able to dump Trump—is an impossible task. CONTINUED
