In anticipation of President Biden’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday night, public pollsters released poll results reporting on, well, the “state of the union” and how Americans feel about Biden. There is increasingly only one lesson from these polls: Partisanship determines how we see the nation and our presidents.
If you just said, “No kidding!” you are correct. This isn’t new news; partisanship has been the biggest factor in perceptions of the nation for quite a while. At the same time, it is worth looking at just how much partisanship and which party holds the presidency shapes our views—and what that means for Biden, as even his own partisans aren’t sold on him running in 2024.
