Religious Commitment to Trumpism

A common response to some of our recent posts about the distinctiveness of evangelical politics is to duck and cover. That is, for some, the extreme stances are not a result of religion per se, but of being white and conservative. Others are not convinced that these are “real” evangelicals, but some enormous band of impostors. For the life of me I can’t figure out why these people would want to pretend that they are evangelical without reality behind it – what cultural cache is there in this identity today? Anyway, these are reasonable hypotheses and it’s surely worth going through them yet again. CONT.
