Breaking News Consumer’s Handbook: Gender and Politics Edition

As of this weekend, more than 600 days remain until the 2020 presidential election. Reporters, news anchors, and pundits have 21 months worth of newsprint and air time to fill with coverage that informs and, on occasion, fails to inform the electorate. There will be shiny objects to chase and many polls to aggregate. And, with at least a half-dozen women in the running for the Democratic nomination, opportunities to fall back on old tropes and invoke double standards abound.

With that in mind, we bring you this Breaking News Consumer’s Handbook: Gender and Politics Edition. Bob spoke with Slate staff writer Lili Loofbourow about the press’s habits and news consumers’ responsibilities on the subject of gender in political coverage.
