Another risk for Republicans is that a mishandling of the issue widens their “economic empathy gap” problem. Even as voters express dissatisfaction with President Obama’s handling of the economy, they still see Democrats as more sympathetic to and more in touch with the economic concerns of average Americans. Any Republican who argues–or is made to look like he/she agrees with the idea–that paying the working poor more money is bad for the economy, is going to look out of touch to most voters. CONT.
