When it comes to the immigration overhaul debate, the U.S.-Mexico border states are different. Those four states – Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas – hold 27.5 million Hispanics, about half of the total U.S. Hispanic population.
As the House of Representatives digs into immigration policy you might think those numbers would have an impact on those congressional delegations. Polls show Hispanics favor most of the measures in the Senate overhaul plan by big margins. So far, however, that doesn’t seem to be making much of a difference in these states. That is, even in the border states – Democratic lawmakers are generally for it, and Republicans are against it. [cont.]
