Two new surveys from Public Religion Research Institute shed light on Americans’ perspectives on the crucial issues raised by two cases that will be heard before the Supreme Court in late March 2013: the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8. The bottom line: half (50%) of Americans favor requiring the federal government to recognize marriages between gay and lesbian couples performed in states where same-sex marriage is legal, while majorities of Americans (52%) and Californians (57%) support allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry legally.
