How States Split on Gay Marriage

As the U.S. Supreme Court waded into the debate over gay marriage this week, one story line was prominent: the skyrocketing support for gay marriage across the U.S.

The turnaround in public opinion has truly been remarkable. Back in 2004, strategists for then-President George W. Bush tried to use state ballot initiatives on issue as a wedge they could use to win key states. And it certainly seemed to work. By 2012, President Barack Obama backtracked on his earlier opposition to gay marriage and announced he was personally in favor of it – and won re-election.

Most public opinion polls now show 50% or more of Americans believe gay marriage should be legal. [cont.]
